Silent Crossing – diagonal lines and details

How to compose your frame with lines, curves and details? In this post I will show you that for great photos you don’t need much money.

Location

I was snowboarding with my buddies over the weekend in Austria and on the way home we stopped for a few hours in Salzburg. The first thing what we did in this small but very beautiful city, we went to the castle. The castle is not very high but you can see the whole city center. In the middle of the city runs the Salzach River and all the sights are on the banks. By good weather on the other side of castle you can see great landscape with Alps on the horizon. This day was very foggy and we couldn’t see even anything. But just below the castle was this crossing with the house.

Composition

For viewer, it is always interesting when a diagonal lines run through the image. His eyes automatically follows the lines and stays on the disturber. In this image the disturber is the house in the middle of the image. Another factor is a lot of details on this image. The house with the garden, the people on the streets, many traces on the snow make the image interesting for the viewer.

For better compositions in your pictures you have to train your eyes. Check out the photos from other photographers. Comment they works and ask how they made it. For example my good friend Asma Namouji posting on Facebook very cool pics. Check out her Facebook-Page.

Equipment and Settings

During this spontaneous trip I carried only my Canon EOS 600D with a Canon EF 1.8 / 50 II lens. In the sum the equipment costs about $600. It was sunny but foggy day, so I set AV-Mode on my camera and set aperture to f9. With this aperture I could take all the detail in the image sharp. The remaining settings were calculated by the camera.

  • Shutter speed: 1/1000
  • Aperture: f9
  • ISO: 100

Tip 2: Try different combinations of settings and gain experience

Post-Processing

As you can see the original image has almost no color. So I decided to make the picture black and white.

For Post-Processing I use Adobe Lightroom. The license for this software costs not much and it’s very good for RAW images. In this post I will not explain how to use Lightroom. This is very extensively. I post my settings for this image below.
